There are a couple examples around my place of residence on my university campus where the PokeStops and Gyms feel unmotivated in the decision on which is which. For example, at the art campus, there is a Gym, a Power Spot, and three PokeStops. The Wayspot representing the primary arts building as well as its galleries is a PokeStop, while a single (less culturally important) sculpture in the outdoor sculpture garden surrounding the building is the area’s Gym.
Is there a path or method for appealing the type that Wayspots are, so that certain spots can have their purpose swapped around in Pokemon GO? Or are they stuck as what they are permanently?

Once Wayspots have been promoted in game, they stay that way. Unless the Wayspot is actually gone and reported for removal, or unless a property owner/manager requests the game location be removed/altered.
That’s unfortunate! I assume even through unofficial/request channels directly to Niantic this can’t be changed?

It sounds good at first, but it would be a really bad idea to some people choose which wayspots were gyms, which ones pokestops and which ones powerspots.
Not everyone would have the same opinion. Some people like isolated, hard-to-reach gyms. Some people like having to go further.
Allowing some people to move the gym would be very unfair for the other people who don’t want the gym moved, or would prefer a third location. You cannot fairly allow such as a choice.

In the example I gave, I rechecked, and the one representing the Rolland center is actually an unused Wayspot, so there’s a chance that one day if the Obelisk statue disappears, Rolland could take its place as the area’s Gym. If, in the future, the gym is removed because the location no longer exists, is there a way to indicate support for one particular unused Wayspot to replace the gym over others, or is it mostly random?
Gym selection at 1 time seemed to be largely based on photo votes.
These days it seems more random which IMO is a fairer option.
