I am close to my 1st upgrade, and previously I got an upgrade next nomination got rejected. Now my other nomination upgrade button is greyout. Please help

Welcome to the forum. That “Upgrade next” button is not an “Upgrade.” “Upgrade next” just tells the system what to upgrade automatically when you earn an upgrade from reviewing. I tested this situation, and the “Upgrade Next” button will come back if you wait a bit, but please understand that it really doesn’t do anything if you aren’t reviewing and earning an actual “Upgrade.”
I recommend that everyone go into settings anyway and turn “Automatically apply upgrades” to OFF. That way you can manually apply upgrades when you earn them without ever worrying about something that you did not want to upgrade being upgrading by the system. It defaults to ON.

As Cyndie described this is not a bug, it’s just that you haven’t earned the Upgrade yet. The fact that your previous Upgrade Next went into voting and was rejected was likely just the normal turnaround of that nomination.
Moving this to General Discussion instead.
I think it IS a bug. Two bugs.
- A resolved nomination should not have “upgrade next” on it.
- When a nomination with “upgrade next” on it is resolved, the option to “upgrade next” should be available to an unresolved nomination.
How it works:
If your “Automatically Apply Upgrades” setting is ON (the default), then when you earn upgrades, they will be automatically applied. If you don’t have one marked “Upgrade Next”, then it will randomly choose a nomination “In Queue” for the upgrade.
Your other option is to turn that setting off.
Then earn an upgrade.
Then go to a nomination that is “In Queue”, and click “Upgrade”. (Not next. Now.)
And you can ignore “Upgrade Next” because it’s too buggy.

I tested letting an “Upgrade Next” go through without ever upgrading it. This is exactly how mine appeared. And it did eventually go away as I said in my first comment. Now to find my results again and post them in here…
And I can’t find when I reported it came back but here is the current status
but i don’t have anything in queue or in voting to show i do have the upgrade next button back now

Yeah, that there’s a bug. An accepted Wayspot shouldn’t say “Upgrade Next”.
Correction: In my prior note I said you can upgrade nominations “In Queue” and neglected to include that you can also upgrade nominations “In Voting” (as long as it doesn’t have the Niantic balloon).

i would not call this unintended use of the “upgrade next” button where it is never actually upgraded a “bug” since the system can recognize and handle it. unless someone got niantic to fix this for me without me requesting it.
The system should recognize and handle it when the nomination becomes accepted. It shouldn’t need to correct itself sometime within the next ~2 days.
I’m not saying I want Niantic to invest time in fixing the bug (especially given that it corrects itself eventually), though it should be trivial to fix.
