Waypoint for existing monument with wrong information - what is the best practice?

Hi,

I am currently looking at an approved Waypoint with the name Church Fountain, with this picture:

The monument in question is the pillar in the center of the photo.

There are however a few problems with the Waypoint. The location is off to a somewhat large extent, the photo isn’t particularly great (background activity + persons, bush in the foreground) and the fact that it isn’t a fountain.

I would like to update the Waypoint - better picture, moving the location, changing the name to the title of the monument (“Mindesmærke for en ukendt kammerat død i tysk koncentrationslejr”, which roughly translates to “Memorial Pillar for Unknown Comrade Killed in German Concentration Camp”) and updating the category and text to reflect that well, it isn’t a fountain.

With such an overhaul, I am unsure of how I should approach the issue however. The Waypoint is clearly for the physical object in question, so part of me leads towards just updating it. With so much information being wrong or unprecise however, I wonder if the best practice would instead be to submit a request for removal, and then submitting a nomination of the monument with the correct information? I do not want to be seen as repurposing the Waypoint, and it feels somewhat wrong to me that the Waypoint has been approved with wrong information only to later be updated with some major changes, instead of being reviewed by its actual merits.

Is there a best practice in cases like this - either submitting edits to update the Waypoint to have the correct information, or going for a removal → submit nomination with correct information?

Best regards and thanks for the advice,

Jakob Helms

When I have a really messed up situation like this, I prefer to give Niantic all the information using one of the forms and let them decide what they want to do with it. I don’t want to repurpose a Wayspot from what was originally submitted, because that is considered abuse, but I don’t know what was originally submitted at this point. I would be concerned about changing a “fountain” wayspot to a “monument.”

If I were doing this, I would use the form linked at the top here under “Wayspot Removals” because that is also for modifications.

When using that form, the options I can choose rarely match what I am trying to do. I just pick something as close as I can get, and then explain the issue in the text box. I can include geo tagged photos this way, and it starts an email chain if I need to send more information. Just be sure that you don’t respond to the automated acknowledgement email if it asks for your credentials as property owner. Wait to reply until the response is from a person.

Best practices on correcting the game board is an issue right now. But repurposing is definitely a no-no.

I would suggest making the edits if the waypoint is for the correct “point of interest”.

When you state a “somewhat large extent” what is this in metres. I believe the max edit in game is 10 metres but larger can be requested through “Help / Chat Bubble”. It may help to include a GPS tagged photo to confirm.

Good luck.

This is one of the already approved images:

Based on satellite imagery and Streetview from 5 years ago, the location appears to only be off by ~10 metres. However, I am not sure if that Streetview reflects the most current location.

Thank you! The location data I have might be off, and Streetview might be correct. I guess I will have to check physically, but it might just be the case that it is not as major as I initially thought it was.

I completely forgot about being able to vote; that seems like a much better image. I guess I’ll just doublecheck the location the next time I am close, and then submit an edit for the title + description, and vote for that picture. Thanks a lot!
