Waypoints in Gated Communities

Hello!!

I am very new at reviewing and submitting waypoints despite playing POGO for years. I have been reviewing the guidelines for days now and I just want some clarification before trying to submit waypoints in my gated community.

I don’t live in a small, normal, type of gated neighborhood. If you look up the name of the gated community I live in, as of 2023, there were 6,231 people living in there. There are probably more people now as it is still a growing community. There are two restaurants, 1 huge lake (you can boat in), 4 ponds (all you can fish in), several different hiking trails, a golf course, two community pools (one in the front and one in the back), tennis courts, 3 different playgrounds, a fire station and a security house.

I know that waypoints get rejected often if it is in gated neighborhoods but seeing as though my “neighborhood” is an actual community I felt as if it would be unfair if the ones I tried to submit were rejected.

Does anyone have any advice? thank you in advance!!!

Submitting things within a gated community is all good. It’s not against the rules. Don’t be afraid of rejection  it’s not the end of the world. Resubmitting is also an option.

I will need It. The closest town is so far from us so no pokestops :folded_hands:t3:

Everything you listed should be viable as they are, except for the fire station and security house.

Oh for sure, but I figured by including that in my statement shows how it’s an actual community instead of just a neighborhood. There are soooo many trails and docks too. I know that there are others in there who play so it’ll really help us out. especially when we can make routes on the hiking trails :face_holding_back_tears:

That’s awesome, I’m happy for you. Dont hesitate to return should you need counsel regarding a rejection :slightly_smiling_face:

Just to clarify, reviewers get the below pop up if they tap the :information_source: button under “Appropriate” when reviewing.

These locations are appropriate:

Any location that is accessible publicly to pedestrians, both indoors and outdoors, is appropriate, including the following locations:

  1. Restricted - locations that restrict access to a subset of people (Gated community or members-only locations, military bases)

  2. Ticketed - locations that require a ticket to access like theme parks, museums that require a ticket to enter

  3. Businesses - indoor locations and businesses with items for purchase

So gated communities are specifically called out as being appropriate places for Wayspots to be. Sounds like you have a few to nominate that you have mentioned

The pedestrian access requirement means that it has to be possible to go up to the POI without being on school ground (or similar, just as scouts), on farmland (public paths and facilities are OK) or single-family private residential property - but it doesn’t have to be possible for everyone.

Not everyone has to be able to access every wayspot. Your area sounds fine for submissions. It wouldn’t matter even if it was a gated community with 100 people who all hate each other and have no community spirit - trail markers, tennis courts etc would all be eligible.

As others have said, you can absolutely nominate the things you’ve mentioned

Things in gated communities are sometimes incorrectly rejected but thats not what is supposed to happen

Hope it goes well

Given limited appeals, after having eligible POIs in gated areas/“private” businesses (like coffeeshops!) rejected by community reviewers for “not being publicly accessible,” I now include the below in the Supplemental Info section:

“Locations that restrict access to a subset of people are allowable locations. The “I” information icon/tool tip in the review flow process for Appropriate Location confirms this.”

While the information is readily available while reviewing, incorrect rejections I’ve had let me know that many reviewers don’t bother using the tooltip or educating themselves on criteria. Which is fair; it’s voluntary labor.

I, myself, fell into this error at first. Back before the tooltips, it was an AMA question that was proof of this allowance. Given that the current rejection title leaves a lot left unsaid, this will be a large problem especially after the level rebalance.

This is also why it is helpful to contextualize the nomination as much as possible. Indirectly learning from experience is one of the ways we can educate others, preferably with links and proof. The reviewer will get a good benchmark from great nomination attempts.

While being access-restricted is not a disqualifier, the POI still needs to meet the qualifier (eligibility criteria) RE: Generic/Non-Generic Businesses

Firstly, welcome to the Wayfarer community and well done on taking the first steps towards being a submitter for your local community.

It may be difficult for us to assist in suggesting specific nominations, but things like entrance signs to parks, nature signs, noticeboards, and various others things will be eligible. You mentioned that there are two restaurants. They may be eligible, so may be worth posting details about them here to see if we can help you determine their acceptances. You mention hiking trails. If there are any hiking trail markers, they should be eligible. I would also suggest submitting the Golf Course entrance sign, or in the absence of that, the first hole. The 2 community pools, tennis courts and 3 playgrounds are all eligible. The Fire station and security house may not be eligible, but would need more information about those before committing to changing my mind on those.

Good luck, and don’t be afraid to post something on here if you need any clarifications.

Sometimes gated communities don’t have street view coverage, which makes it harder for reviewers to confirm location. In this case your surroundings pic and supporting info text can really help your case. Try to show both the POI and some landmark, or use your text to point out what’s visible on satellite pics if it’s not super obvious, or even linking to a map or community homepage etc.
