Waypots that can't be seen on satellite or Streetview

I’ve had a nomination for a footbridge in a local park (which would normally be eligible) rejected on the grounds that it cannot be verified because you cannot see it on satellite or streetview.

I agree that it cannot be seen because it’s in a valley in an ancient woodland, it is part of several trails through the park and the park itself is a fantastic local resource (at least when people aren’t disposing of body parts in it )

What are peoples views on locations that cannot be verified by satellite/streetview?

I’ve had several nominations when although it would look like a good nomination otherwise, it cannot be verified. Should these automatically be rejected on the grounds of not being able to verify them?

People should use “I don’t know” on Location in the Accuracy section when they can’t see the poi but it looks possible that it could exist there. It is on the submitter to convince that the footbridge could be where you say it is. That could mean links in the supporting section to evidence of a maintained trail in deep woods where there is nothing else to reference in a supporting photo.

It really depends on the supporting info and photos. A good supporting photo should show the area, with the bridge in it. I’ve seen many nominations that don’t place the nomination in the supporting photo, and with no satellite/Street View, I can’t determine if it’s there.

I reviewed a few nominations like this today, including a footbridge over a creek. While I can’t see the bridge on satellite and Street View, all the information, including the supporting photo, all of it pointed to the bridge being over the creek (which was listed on Google Maps), and near the location chosen. I chose IDK for location, but thumbs upped appropriate, safe, permanent/distinct, as well as exercise and explore.

Reviewers are told to use their best judgment, but it’s also important for submitters to provide reviewers with the best information to make a decision. I myself have nominated places that aren’t on satellite or Street View, but with the supporting info and photo, I make sure to place the nomination correctly so reviewers can place it where I’ve noted it is.

Personally, if I’ve exhausted every option to try to verify it on street view, I mark it “I don’t know” then tick “location” for accuracy. I was lead to believe this was the equivalent of 3* in the old system - which it told us to select if the location couldn’t be verified but was likely to be there (e.g. if under a cover of trees).

I would only mark it thumbs down if I were categorically certain it didn’t exist there, or if I didn’t feel it was a good nomination but no other rejection fit.

You can either create a collage of multiple photos to determine what’s there, buy the equipment that Google suggests, or rent a Google car.

If it seems reasonable I accept it.
Often there’s a trail or stream marked on google maps at the location so I give the benefit of the doubt

I havent used “I dont know”- I assumed that would reject? Does it not?

they aren’t very clear, but a :-1: is a rejection, not “i don’t know”

I guess the issue is not fully knowing what each item on the review flow does as a whole at the end of the review. For something that was supposed to be simple, there are definitely a few confusing bits.

it is very rare for me to not have at least one “i don’t know” on a review. and i am definitely getting agreements in the “accepted” count.

Okay that helps, thanks.

I think partly it could be that Google Maps itself is inaccurate in that area due to those features being marked during the era you could edit the maps yourself. The bridge is between the two paths and over the brook. The brook runs between the two paths, not over the path as is shown.

Hi
Are we talking Boggart Hole Clough here?
Can you show us pictures of the bridge and the supporting pic?
A lot depends how the bridge looks in both pictures.
the alltrails website has a map where you can see there must be a bridge.

You could include the link in the supporting info and explain what to look at.
You could also use an app that stamps the GPS coords on the picture f ro the supporting picture only and stress in the text that this is ok
