Not really to do with the topic but more astounded that this has happened in some locations. It makes sense of course, but for the three local cemeteries I can think of, they have all just expanded since I’ve been alive and have taken on more burials.
Here they are closing a community allotment to expand a graveyard… the dead must be more important than the living.
There is more than one old cemetery near me that is absolutely stuffed with wayspots because it is absolutely stuffed in real life with features to explore. It has a trail, explanatory boards, interactive features and is quite a significant destination for visitors to visit and wander round.
Some cemeteries and graveyards are definitely eligible for wayspots. Some graves of historic people are also definitely eligible.
I have a spot in my town that I haven’t been sure how it would go over if I nominated it, though I may give it a go one of these days. It’s an individual headstone, but it is:
-On the roadside as you travel down an actual street it down, so not deep inside the actual cemetery
-For a well-known community member
-Absolutely hilarious custom headstone that the deceased had commissioned with a sculptor while he was still alive, sculpted with busts of his three comedy idols (nyuk nyuk nyuk)
-Is listed on Roadside America and Weird NJ as a roadside attraction to check out, as the deceased intended
Based on the Niantic clarification above, I think it is at least eligible…?
If you do submit this, provide the artist information in the description and links to prove this is an attraction in the supporting. That is all I can say without seeing it.
That description is of something that is potentially eligible as it is intended to be explored. There could be problems, which would deny it, such as being in an active part of the cemetery where other gravestones are being visited by relatives.

Just to let you know that the second link, from roadsideamerica, is currently blocked for a UK IP address. This is unlikely to matter, but it’s curious enough I thought I’d mention it.
The only thing I hate is that the game went in and inconsistently removed prior graveyards so random places have like 50 headstones as pokestops, and others struggle to get historical figures approved. When I’m voting in Wayfarer, I should be able to flag existing pokestops for review to see if they should truly still be in the game. If they want to be so strict, every stop should be re-reviewed periodically instead of existing for 10 years unless someone deletes it in-person.
How would that work logistically?
The cemetery my father is in, has a lot of non-grave-related statues (there’s a golf themed section with golfers - there’s a golf course across the street - and other statues that depict local wild animals), a fountain and gazebo at the front parking lot/office area, and an LFL near the back gate (emergency/fire evac route).
It has stops in every cell (including two gyms) but none of them are actually graves. (One of the gyms is the gazebo, the other is a statue of two grazing deer at the dead end of the road that connects all the parking areas.)
I think that’s fine as long as players are respectful. And nearly all of them are car reachable anyway, so no need to tromp around.
