Why do you do it?

Hey there, I’m still pretty new to the Wayfarer community. I started playing Ingress late in 2014 pretty casually, and later picked up PoGo when it came out. It was fun to have a game where I could actually play and relate to my close friends (even if I wish more people played Ingress).

I think in my case I have a fairly selfish reason for making wayspots; I just want more Portals, Gyms, & Pokestops in my area. Being in a suburb is nothing like the pain of being a rural player, but after having my vehicle break down I wanted to be able to play without buying an Uber or getting a ride, so I search for interesting places near me.

So far, I’ve had two wayspots approved, and I feel they’re decent contributions to both Wayfarer, along with the local community of Niantic AR games. It’s been fun so far.

So I ask this: Why do you do it?

I also do it for the same reason I feel like the suburbs need more work and so does the more deserted parts of my town. The downtown area has probably like a thousand or two portals/ pokestops gym’s flowers Etc… however the south side of town is deeply lagging behind I want more people out here to be able to play without having to go 30 minutes downtown. It would be nice just to be able to walk my kids around our neighborhood and our neighborhood areas without having to load them up just to go downtown to play with an area with a decent amount of portals/pol stops. I want my family to be able to spend time and play together as a family. Plus be near the house so I can get them snacks without having to get them take out or having to bring a picnic so far from home. Don’t get me wrong me and my boys still go for hikes and take picnics with us. However it’s much nicer because our food stays fresher longer. I do it I guess for my family so we can spend quality time together close to home. We save on gas, and we get to see each other and spend time together close to home. Especially after dinner or after lunch it’s nice for me and the kids to go for a around the neighborhoods around here to play games together and bond. Albuquerque has loads of those neighborhood signs as portals/poke stops. Ideally I think everyone should make exceptions for those in the suburbs of Santa Fe as well. They all have have pedestrian access, and Hiking trails nearby. I would like anything that extends my time with my kids though so I’m a bit biased.

I do it for the people!!!

Seriously, though. There’s something about Wayfarer that is just fun for me. I started because I was a PGO player who wanted more interaction points in my area. So I figured out how it all worked and started submitting things. There’s a great feeling that accompanies seeing your own handiwork show up in a game that others will be able to use.

One of the things I enjoy about the “game” of Wayfarer is that I don’t have to meet up with anyone to do it (though I can if I want to). There’s only 4 “events” per year, so I don’t get event fatigue like with the other Niantic games. And, for the most part, my success is not RNG. I get results based on my own expertise and the amount of effort I put into it.

It’s also a game aspect that not many people care about so it’s easy to become the local expert. The skills you need to be good at Wayfarer align really well with my natural abilities - so that’s always a plus.
