Appealling huge octopus sculpture

That’s one of the reasons I always use the upload later feature. Get home, upload, put on hold and then edit.

The only other thing I have been able to think of is that there may have been a glitch with the photo upload. But then it would have been rejected immediately, not a couple of hours later. That is not the same as the ML model rejecting it.

Hi @AScarlettSabre

In the past, when users have received instant rejections related to photos, it has been for things such as n-de sculptures. This has never been confirmed by Niantic, but the community has made an assumption that there is a filter which checks for inappropriate photos. One of the other Ambassadors also received a similar rejection last month, with this displayed the exact rejection reason, for a nomination of a sculpture which depicted a n-de person for example. Like you, the nomination was auto rejected soon after upload, and listed ‘photo’ as the reason.

If this is the case, then it may have been a false positive unfortunately on your photo of the octopus. Some AI system may have thought it to be an explicit photograph. This check presumably only cares about the photo, so I doubt having a different/longer description would have made a difference. If I am correct, I would say that resubmitting with the same photo will give exactly the same result every time.

Some of the comments which has been posted here may not reflect this understanding. The fact that it went into voting immediately means it would not have undergone community review, as there is a certain period of time during which nominations cannot enter community voting. This time period can be bypassed using Upload Later, however you indicated you did not use Upload Later.

(I am aware that there is a rejection reason which describes ‘automated process’. However, we also know there are different checks at different stages. For example, some things get rejected instantly, whereas other processes occur 21-24 hours after upload. It may be that the displayed rejection reasons are different based on the process that occurred.)

Didn’t even think about this, but now I can see this.

Yes, I suspected this was the case, hence I mentioned AI in my initial post. Somebody from my town nominated a “community garden” as a Wayspot and it got auto-rejected for poor quality photograph, even though this person had written a literal essay about it for the Wayspot description. Upon appeal, it was instantly accepted.

The mentioned ambassador example in question, rejected immediately after uploading.

I do not have an appeal left at the moment so this really sucks…
