I recall that they did post on the old forum that either method was acceptable.
So the embedded geolocation information or an app that produces a watermark. It gives options​:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I have never seen staff say they accept the watermark without the information embedded, and I didn’t want this person to go to unnecessary effort to install a program that is not required.

I was not nearly as active on the old forum, though.

I would guess that is why the statement is just provide geolocation without saying a precise method so that someone can decide which suits them best.
Anyway they know now. :+1:

I am not saying there is no value to these apps. It can be an easy way for the person who took the photo to see what location data is on the photo, but is not necessary for the appeal. We have also seen Niantic accept an appeal from video evidence.
