Clarifications on Pokémon Go Power Spots [Discussion]

This is infuriating. Now these locations - at least the ones that actually exist - can never be used in Ingress or as Pokestops/gyms since they show as duplicates in the review flow. This is not a good addition.

Yet there are some who have nominated Power Spots that meet Wayspot criteria, only to have them rejected or marked as a duplicate.

Glad you brought this up again. The locally-owned bookstore I’ve found with a Power Spot from time to time would meet criteria to be a Wayspot, but I don’t want to submit it if ML is going to reject it as a duplicate. And I don’t want to waste an appeal if the appeals team rejects it as a duplicate, too.

Lately, we’ve been told that if a business changes, we must report the business as closed and re-submit the new business to be reviewed per criteria. As a reviewer, I try and follow this (despite it not always being clear based on what is presented).

How should we review Powerspot edits that don’t give us a photo or description when the business may have changed? I assume check Google for the “current” business, but is this considered aiding in abuse? Is it even considered abuse?

I also have a question about editing the location for apartment buildings. Most that I have come across are in the middle of the building, possibly in someone’s apartment. I’ve tried moving the pin to the main entrance of the building, which can still be accessed from a sidewalk and I feel it less intrusive to those living there, but have had some rejected by the community. I really don’t want to waste an appeal on any of these.

How do we handle these location placements at apartment buildings? I feel it should be similar to a local restaurant, being at the entrance or dining area, not the kitchen or other employee only areas.

I haven’t seen a single Power spot show up in my reviews. I don’t think they ever will, I believe this is referring to the edits showing up in the reviews and the power spots showing up on the map.

there have been several reports that submissions were marked duplicate of power spots here on the forum

[edited to correct “power spots” to “power spot imports”]

I have gotten Power Spot edits for title and location in review. I can tell you that the edits are exactly the same as edits for Wayspots; location edits will give you 2 or more points on the map to choose from and title edits give you 2 different title as well as None of the above. Being photos can’t be uploaded yet for Power Spots, they have an image placeholder, unlike most Wayspot edits.

One thing I don’t like about the location edits is that most that I have done have been rejected, and I’m moving them to the entrance of the building. I think I’ve only had 1 accepted for a health food store, while all others have been rejected.

Title edits haven’t been an issue; most have been for apartment buildings, and I’m just adding “Apartments” to the name, so it doesn’t seem like some random building.

I think editing Power Spots is dependent on a few things. Being they are only up for 2 days at a time, then disappear for awhile after that, many may not even care to submit edits. Others may not even know that the titles and locations can be edited, and removal reqests are now the same as with regular Wayspots. Outside of the edits challenge, I’m one of the few in my area that actually submits edits, so some may not care as much as I do about accuracy.

I’ve done several reviews from areas I know have several power spots and haven’t had a single one of them show up in the nearby, so I’m curious why I’m not and other people are?

I was referring to the nearby.

When will we be able to get this?

Mod Edited and merged.

I’m going to merge this into the main powerstop topic.

you can see these as ! on the nomination map screen currently, but only in pokemon go

Now that you can submit photos and description edits to Power Spots I wanted to see what that meant.

Location is on Niantic Spatial/Ingress/other games

  • Pokémon GO does not show an existing description even if there is one.
  • Wayfarer shows the existing description on Contributions
  • Pokémon GO does not show existing photos (or any photos) on the Power Spot
  • Wayfarer shows the current photo apply with yours (like you’d expect) on Contributions

Location is an import that doesn’t appear elsewhere

  • Pokémon GO shows no description as there isn’t one to show
  • Wayfarer shows the usual (No description) on Contributions as the current one
  • Pokémon GO does not show existing photos (or any photos) on the Power Spot
  • Wayfarer shows the current photo apply with yours (like you’d expect) on Contributions with the current photo being the grey default one.

Slightly different things so I wanted to say the differences, especially where Pokémon GO seems to think there’s no description from the ones that aren’t imported

Decided to settle this for myself and submitted an eligible nomination for a powerspot import that was confirmed for me not to exist in the Wayfarer database app - whatever I should call that now. It was NOT rejected by the 24 hour mark as a duplicate by the ML model. Will wait a few days and give it an upgrade and see what happens.

Even IF these are not showing up as duplicates in voting, they are still unhelpful showing as “existing Wayspots” on the nomination map screen. Is something that has an ! eligible or not? And since we can edit these, there is the potential to have no way to discern which is a Powerspot import and which is already in the database.

It feels very reminiscent of when Ingress got the 4sq imports added to the map.

Agents were annoyed and the bit people picked up on from Thia was:

There is only going forward and we are doing our best to get things cleaned up as quickly as possible. If you run across one of these new Portals with no picture, snag AP by submitting one If you see a Portal that you feel does not meet Wayfarer standards, let us know by using the Scanner to report it.

Which kind of felt like shrugging off the trash that was added to the map. We have the same here again and it’s Wayfarers who will report and fix after Pokémon GO throwing everything at the wall and then leaving the room.

I’d rather people not add pictures to the imports. While pictureless: Power Spots are obviously a special case. With pictures: they blend in more with real wayspots, and confuse Explorers even more.

agree. in my part of the world, if it doesn’t have a photo, then it is a powerspot import. but in other parts of the world, they have photoless imports that are wayspots and are pokestops and gyms in pokemon go. not just powerspots. but since ingress chose not to use even these imports, neither shows there. and some are duplicates and some are not. it is a ridiculous mess. and we don’t have an app for everyone to use to tell which are database wayspots and which are not.

I feel like it’s going to be a very limited number of people who do add photos to Power Spots.

I only did so to share information on the process. I’ll update again after the edits are (hopefully) accepted as to if it changes anything in Pokémon GO or any other games.

thank you for the research!

However I would add photos to this example.

If I was on holiday in India or Brazil or somewhere that got 4sq imports, every photoless PokéStop that I found would have a new photo by the end of my trip (or have been reported if it didn’t exist).
