Criteria Clarification Collection - Discussion

Oh a question came up about murals ON adult locations. That should be addressed in Unique Art

Previous guidance was that if you did not have to enter the adult location, and if the subject matter of the mural was not adult, then it was eligible.

Yes that AMA is considered too old now.
We can get it add to the list to consider, but the idea is not to have every single situation clarified but rather make sure the principles are clear enough to interpret and apply.
and you know Soon…

People need clarifications. People need to understand what Niantic wants in their database. People need to understand what Niantic does not want in their database. People need to understand what rejection reasons should be used for nominations that should be denied.

Maybe when Niantic goes to all ML or in house decisions, we will no longer need clarifications.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Its almost like they either have an idea of exactly what they want but they just refuse to actually tell us, or they have no idea but expect us to somehow work it out with threats of punishments if we get it wrong.

Many things are of course subjective and dependant on local and cultural factors but when the same questions and frustrations keep coming up, it is clear that the system is insufficient and this is exactly why we need proper discussions that enable them to come to conclusions that can then be made obvious to all.

Explain the idea of nuance properly and give some decent informed examples and why they are good or bad, the current clarifications are a good start but still very far away from what is really required, especially when they display a lack of understanding of local areas.

A major part of managing a community such as this is being clear, consistent and communicating well, something that the team, even after all the feedback are so severely lacking at. If they want us to submit and accept the correct things, we need to know what those things are and be provided with the proper tools and information to do a good job!

I feel like they should say it’s different than navigation signs with a list of major cities in various directions, right? Ones that are more of art pieces versus a navigation aid.

This is just so cool. I would one hundred percent approve that. So cool and even has a supporting plaque. If I visit LA I have to check that out

I just want to say thank you for this post! I agree 1000% with this, and you’ve said it all so well. This is absolutely something that needs to be addressed and streamlined.

These criteria clarification/refinements need to be reflected in the guidelines on the Wayfarer submittal website.

Here I was all prepared to learn something.

Please keep in mind that not everyone is a native English speaker.

Please, as @seaprincesshnb said, not all the people are native English speakers. DLuarca and me are both Spanish speakers and for us the word in Spanish is “vándalico” so it makes more sense for us to say “vandalic” instead of “vandalistic”.

Clarification post about Disc Golf
“ Wayfarer regards the whole course/play area in each sport as one field of play. This means there should be one Wayspot, which could be the first tee or a marker at the start to represent the whole course.”
And then this shows up in my local Featured Wayspots Showcase. Niantic, please stop sending mixed messages!

I hope Niantic doesn’t repeat “Signs for locations/objects that are already existing Wayspots - Eligible, if they are a significant distance from the object or location.” Unless they define “significant”. Ten miles? 100 meters?

Around here: libraries, churches, and tourist destinations put directional signs a km or more away, at the intersection of their road and a main road. I don’t see how signs that say “turn here to get to the library” or “Methodist Church this way”, or “Stadium, 5 miles” are great places to explore. But the are a sign for a valid thing, “a significant distance” from it.

That’s one of my pet peeves as well - “a significant distance” is just sloppy language (my opinion only, and not intended as mockery) that’s very difficult to interpret. If The Sign isn’t a location pin for the Nominated Thing, then why is the sign eligible? Is it super-awesome-looking, made by a famous artist, hand-crafted by local schoolchildren - or is it just a regular sign with no specific eligibility? If a restaurant, for example, is accepted in town, and referenced under “Food” on a highway off-ramp amenities sign, would that amenities sign be eligible if there was pedestrian access? I wouldn’t accept it if seen in review, although I certainly wouldn’t be angry if others interpreted the sign as eligible/acceptable. The language is too murky.

Yes please. I see a lot of generic apartment building/community signs in my area, and I keep getting a lot of such signs to review. I fail to see what’s so important about them and why the qualify.

I feel like I’m completely behind the curve, but I’ll post it.

Even considering that “Machine Learning in Wayfarer” is involved, I think it is necessary to organize and enrich the contents of Criteria first. This work will involve a considerable amount of work as we will be proceeding with systemization in mind. The updated Criteria will contain more information and will take a lot longer for Wayfinder to read, but it is necessary now that the test is gone. The contents of the Criteria also need to be verified again. As I’m sure everyone agrees, I believe that, for example, “chain stores and franchises” should be removed from the disapproval criteria. Basically, I think that decisions should be made on the basis of “exploration” and “exercise” and “social with others.” It may also be necessary to clearly state in the Criteria the prohibited acts and penalties for them.

We also need a collection of case studies, or rather guidelines. Seating benches, Trails & Markers, Parks (parks themselves, park nameplates, playground equipment), supermarkets, stores, and signboards representing them, etc., need to be clearly explained as to their eligibility as Wayspots. Furthermore, there is a need for a system to incorporate the items discussed and concluded by AMA and the community into case studies and guidelines. NianticTintino has also prepared 18 topics for discussion in “Criteria Clarification Collection”.Considering the response so far and the fact that the wording that clearly needs to be revised remains the same, Niantic wants to maintain this chaotic state with the intention of actively exchanging opinions in the community etc. Isn’t it? I think so.

If the a Criteria Clarification prompts a long thread discussing what the clarification means or covers or don’t… Clarify the Clarification. Don’t leave long debates/info mixed into other threads. Add a sentence/2 into the clarification.

You are never going to have a single explanation that covers every single situation for the entire planet. People have got to learn to use their best judgment and be comfortable living in the gray areas.

Did you know if you misspell a word like grey for example you can change it from gray to the correct spelling just by highlighting the word?
