Discouraged to contribute to voting again

It took me a while to gain my confidence with the Wayfarer System when there was a bug earlier where my agreements medal wouldn’t update and I went from Great to Fair. I was back at Great and in the last week I’ve gone from Great to Fair. At this point, I am now discouraged to contribute because I have no context to the sudden drop in my rating over the last 8 days. I don’t skip and usually I come on every few hours to make 3-7 ish votes at a time. The feeling of discouragement without context. I am not sure if the regular community queues are backed up again and outstanding things I voted on are not reconciled, but I don’t know if I’ll continue voting watching a free fall in my rating.

I take pride making contributions to this game and always exploring for new gems. I think I am just looking for feedback or encouragement.

Ok — first thing I would say is that is definitely ok to skip.

Your rating takes a while to settle as you wait for decisions.

You will get a feel for what fellow reviewers in your areas like. The key is agreements. That is voting the same way as the majority.

This is not always in accordance with so called clarifications and advice you see here. Localities differ, countries differ and things with the same / similar name can be really different in other places.

So your rating goes on how many times you agree with others. If you feel a wayspot you don’t accept personally will be accepted anyway —- well skipping will preserve your rating.

As I understand things ……… but of course nothing about this is straight forward.

If you overall, enjoy helping out with reviewing —— then I encourage you to continue on. You will find your own way …

It’s absolutely okay to skip nominations you’re just not sure about, or that you think might end up being a disagreement for you. The button is there, there’s nothing wrong with using it. (I think it will eventually stop letting you skip if you use it too much, but I think they increased the limit at some point and I haven’t run into that problem in a long time.)

Along the same lines, it’s okay to use the “I don’t know” option while reviewing if you can’t decide either way for sure. I use this option frequently when I review, especially for pictures and text; sometimes it’s pretty bad or low effort in my opinion, but maybe not quite to rejection level - I really don’t know sometimes.

I’ll also advise to really consider each nomination; while some are obvious right away (churches, schools), most nominations fall somewhere in between, especially with ML deciding most of the obvious ones. I answer each question individually and honestly, not based on my opinion of the nomination overall. Just because I don’t personally like something for some reason, that doesn’t mean it won’t make an acceptable Wayspot.

I skipped a bunch of things and my rating went from great to poor over the course of a day. It’s stuck there for a week with over 2000 reviews and a thousand agreements. I’ve been doing this a month.

I don’t get what happened. The usual advice of waiting hasn’t seen my rating rebound. I’m clicking through things and reviewing properly. I reject lots of things that get approved which ought not be: school locations, generic geodetic markers, memorial benches that are not significant, generic businesses. I also report fake nominations.

What am I doing wrong that this work has been rendered useless and pointless?

I have an upgraded nomination that’s now been in review over a month and over a week with the upgrade.

Either something is wrong or the system has punished me for something without providing any feedback on what I did wrong. It’s so opaque and frustrating.

Warm welcome @BlanketHogg !!

Yes it can be very frustrating at times for everyone.

As far as I know, the rating is based on how often your opinion coincides with the end result. You say you are not accepting a lot of submissions and they end up getting accepted. So no agreements for you. Then it lowers your % of agreeing with the end result.

The advice you get here is generally good. Advice for presenting submissions is very good.

What is often considered as not acceptable on these discussions though, can be something, that is nearly always accepted at your location. To me this demonstrates the importance of local knowledge.

If you know something is going to be accepted but you don’t like it and cannot bring yourself to go with the majority, then maybe skip is your best option. Skipping rather than “not accepting” will not affect your rating if the poi is, in fact, accepted as you thought it would.,

I saw a post from Dadcaesar that summed it up quite well. It was along the lines of rating depends on agreeing with the majority.

I do not think you are being punished as everybody seems to suffer bad treatment in this system. It is hard to feel valued. A lot of effort is put in with no reward.

The more people like us review then the quicker an answer is delivered or so you would think.

You have a done a lot by my standards. I have been involved this year. 1175 reviews, 269 accepted, 111 not accepted, 26 duplications. Rating is great.

Those geodactic things always get accepted here and the memorial benches generally the vast majority accepted too. The benches are subjective and open to opinion anyway. Schools and generic never accepted (or hardly ever) here. I have never reported but have susupected fake once or twice. Better things to spend time on.

Have chuckled from time to time at some submissions

Any way don’t feel too bad and remember it is a game. Try and remember the good things

I skip but that led to lower ratings.

I asked wayfarer and I got a message that indicated not to use third party or plugins. I had used some of the common browser plugins to make searching google easier and tracking stats more comprehensive. I thought I was doing something helpful and wise.

This contradicts advice from here or Reddit that I got.

I didn’t intend to break ToS. I think the rating drop is a soft lock because there’s no reason imo that a great rating would go to poor so quickly and permanently when I’m simply applying the criteria as I have understood and checked with the community and best practices- things I follow even when I disagree.

I recognize that there is a need for more stops in rural areas. I live in one. If there’s a case under the guidelines to be made then I would approve. When in doubt I will use “I don’t know”.

I rarely skip anymore because I found that it impacts rating - or so I’ve
been led to believe.

This process is way too opaque.

2144
417 accept
376 reject
72 duplicates

40% agreements and many of those are likely still not cleared since I’ve done them quickly. So I’m outpacing your 34% agreement rate.

I guess Niantic doesn’t want the free labor.

It dont affect rating for skip.

I skip so many due to language or boring edits. So many i cant even skip sometimes anymore and have highest rating

But since its all opinion based i stop contributing ad all to vote on nominations

Hi and thanks for your reply.

I do not know anything about add on plug ins etc. Maybe that is why they have lowered your rating??

Skips do not affect rating at all.

Your numbers look all right. So I do not know why your rating has dropped.

It’s a shame someone from the company doesn’t respond. Like you say they are getting free labour.

I still do think it’s about agreeing with the majority though. And that is why you get the term “agreements”. Pogo badge says you need 1500 “agreements” for badge.

I feel your frustration

Hi @WillZedd
Idk the exact time but I made a post at “bug reports” because my rating dropped also, while I’m tracking my stats in detail.
Aaron marked it as “not a bug” and told me, that the rating is connected to agreements and disagreements.
Since we’re not able to track incoming disagreements, I had to assume that there was a wave of incoming disagreements at my point of dropping (after reporting it and Aarons response my rating get back to great).
Aaron told me to be patient.
I still believe that there’s a bug, but I’m not at the right end (my rating dropped again, and I have the best success rate ever).

The plug ins and skips do not affect rating.
Niantic have said it’s to do with agreements and disagreements.

Edited to add link to a post by Niantic staff:

Hello! I have exactly the same problem. I vote, I see that the % is increasing (that is, there are agreements for each nomination that I viewed), but the rating dropped to zero. In April of this year, there was an update on the Niantic website, after which they broke the system and the ratings dropped for all my friends, and for 4 months!!! Niantic was inactive, they did not respond to requests to check the stability of the site. I’m afraid that this is happening again!

and the saddest thing is, I don’t understand how to get through to the management of Niantic, so that they would initiate a check of the stability of the site. it’s terrible and disgusting. hands drop and there is no desire to watch the nominations!

I got a reply after I hammered different contact options. They said (I’m paraphrasing) “we got your messages, be patient we’re looking into it”

That was October 5, today is the 11. Nothing since. I’m not holding my breath.

Either my account got flagged for something I have no idea what it would be or there’s a systematic problem like you mention.

What method was that through?

Hello again! Tell me, are there any changes or answers from the wayfarer developers? My rating is still bad, but all the nominations that I consider bring me %.
