How do I use my phone to update Google maps?

I know I saw instructions from someone here how to do it, and stupidly I did not take a screenshot or otherwise notate how it’s done. Trying to Google it keeps giving me results on how to update the maps app on my phone. I want to do this because Hathaway Park here has zero street view available, not sure why since there isn’t even a gate to go down the street. I also want to get street view data in the towns historic area where we have multiple rebuilt historic buildings, which I plan to eventually request become wayspots.

Thank you in advance.

Simple road edits can be done via the (+) Contribute button, which on my Android, is in the bottom right corner.

Near the top of that view, is a row of buttons like Add place, Update place, and so on. On my device, I have to scroll to the right a little bit to see the Update road button. There is also the Add photo button to the left of that.

Though, neither of those will get you street view content. For that, it looks like Create and Publish your own Street View images is the place to start.

Also, note that GMaps is not the only service that offers a Street View like option. I’ve sometimes found that Bing Maps’ “Streetside” option to be more up-to-date than SV. (Same with sat imagery, actually.). So, maybe that might have your street in question covered?

Street View seems to not cover private roads. There are a few mobile home parks around here that are not covered at all, but do have wayspots in them. So, it is not a requirement. Just have to work harder on those supporting images.

There is a guide on Reddit.

[Guide] How to Photosphere in 2023

The Street View app was discontinued today, which was what many of us used to create and publish Photospheres to support our nominations. However, the app is still very useful for Android devices! If you have an iOS device, you’ll need to stitch together your own Photospheres (see below), or get an Android or 360° Camera.

Here is the TL;DR:

For Android devices, you can still use the Street View app to create Photospheres. The only thing you cannot do is upload the Photosphere from the app. You have to now use a third-party publisher to upload the Photosphere.

For iOS devices, the Street View app may or may not have any functionality. You can still use your phone to create Photospheres, but you have to use separate apps. (See Hugin)

Here are the three basic steps:

  • Take a 360° photo. You can use one of the following to do so:
    • Google Street View App (Android Only)
      • If you had previously installed the app, check the Manage section under “Manage Apps & Device” section in the Play Store to see if you redownload the app.
      • If you cannot download it any longer, you can sideload the app.
    • Bubbli app (iOS only)
    • A 360° camera
    • Photosphere mode on the Camera app for Pixel phones
    • Software to stitch together your own Photosphere (Method for iOS)
      • See Hugin
  • Upload the Photosphere image to a desktop device
    • On Android, Photospheres are saved in a folder called “panoramas”.
  • To publish your photosphere you can:
  1. Use a site called maps.moomoo.me (simple, no watermark, slower) or
  2. Use a program called Pano2VR (more complex, more options, watermarked, faster)
  • This application has a free trial that allows you to publish as many Photospheres as you want for free, however the Photospheres become watermarked. The watermark is not very intrusive, and is mainly noticeable on light colors.
  • Pano2VR uploads Photospheres appear on the map within minutes and are available to view right after uploading, while MooMoo uploads take about 30 minutes just to become viewable and take hours to show on the map as a blue circle.

For a in-depth explanation, check out my full guide here.

I also made a short tutorial on how to use the program Pano2VR which you can find in the guide as well.

Does this work for you? I have an Android phone and the old Street View app, but it simply will no longer create a photosphere on my phone. Galaxy S22. I tried many times when this first came out. It would look like it was going through the process, but simply would not put together a photosphere.
