In Voting process taking too long

I have had nominations labeled as ‘in voting’ since September, what’s the deal here? If supposedly, it depends on other people in the community nearby reviewing it and no one is doing so, how are we supposed to move on with our nominations?

While frustrating, and not normal, a couple of months isn’t that bad.

There are folks on here who have had some in review for several months, maybe even years (they’ll often pipe up their examples).

Yeah, it is a real issue if ML doesn’t decide them these days. If no one is reviewing, earning an upgrade won’t help. Back before ML existed, my nominations regularly took over 2 years to come to a decision unless I applied an upgrade.

[Edited to add that you could help reduce the backlog in your area by reviewing anyway, even if not to earn an upgrade necessarily, and that might bring yours to the top of the queue by getting others decided.]

I just noticed my oldest ones are in Niantic Voting and dated 2024-03-11 and 2024-04-23.

Those I think in both cases, those were appeals (one of which is now dupe anyway, and the other was probably a bit weak).

That’s so weird, I see that I’m not alone. It’s just frustrating to see the 20 nominations after those and seeing some get accepted within the next day.

Hello and welcome @lsmnrl
It is confusing and frustrating.

The ones that are accepted within 24 hour will probably say “our team” in the acceptance email.
That phrase and the short time indicates it was accepted by a programme, nicknamed Emily, that uses machine learning to decide if a submission is something that is acceptable or rejectable. So you can get a very quick reject or accept. If Emily is unclear about accept or reject, it then goes to the community for review ……and that can take time.
So enjoy the quick accepts. :+1:

My understanding is that, at least partially, there is a type of distance filter throttle in place to prevent items moving from one stage to the next.

If a spot is already in voting, then no other spots within a certain distance will move to that stage. My understanding is that this will help reduce duplicates from showing up. If a shiny new object shows up in real life, and 20 players all notice it and nominate, only one gets it as, hopefully, the rest will get duplicated against it. But if someone finds something cool that has been overlooked for a while, likely there will be less activity in that area, and it will likely move forward more quickly. (I believe the same process follows for all types of contributions, not just nominates, but I’m less sure on that.)

Then, once in voting, yeah, depends on how many players are actively voting for stuff in that area.

But that could explain why some things move forward quickly and some take a while.

Then, just plain old bugs in a large complicated system may turn up. :->

I think the distance filtering is actually implemented by some size S2 cells, but that detail probably isn’t important for this.

I see, so distance filter and some sort of ai named Emily, new things to take into consideration. Curious as to how each works to strategically and rightfully get nominations through.

It’s certainly complicated.
If you review you can earn upgrades. An upgrade can be applied to your nominations to help show it to more reviewers to try and get it resolved quicker. I

Well, I’ll be. My weak one got unjammed, approved and live (in Ingress).

I think it also depends on other nominations in the area
