K-12 Clarification about music/art schools

What are the actual criteria on K-12 schools? My waypoint was rejected and then denied appeal, despite clearly teaching all ages(it’s on the website and signs in front). I would really like better and more convincing clarification about what counts as K-12. Were the reviewers and the employee handling the appeal all wrong? If so, how could I get this approved?

Title: Opus School of Music
Description: Where to learn music!
Supporting: They are a small music school located in downtown Camas WA, directly across the street from Safeway and a short walk to the historic areas. They teach all ages, I’m actually going to go there to learn guitar.

Hi! I doubt we are going to get clarification for absolutely every case, but here I would add proof of them teaching all ages (eg. link to adult classes) to the supporting info. Similarly, I would remove all mention of yourself from the supporting info, if the text shared here is the one you used in your nomination, as this can potentially be perceived as identifying.

I can’t see what the appeal reviewer wrote since you blurred the text, but I can see them erring on the side of caution. You’d rather not accidentally approve a K-12 in the absence of definite proof, and the onus is on the submitter to pre-emptively address such concerns.

Hello and welcome,

The clarification for K-12 schools are those that primarily focus on educating those under the age of 18. This school offers classes to all ages, from music, dance, art, and theater, so it should be eligible. If it was something like an elementary, middle, or high school where classes are taught to those under the age of 18, then it would be ineligible as its main focus is on educating youth, and there could be safety and security issues if there was a Wayspot on those types of school grounds.

I do think this is a bad appeal decision, especially looking at their website. I don’t know if you included the website when you appealed, but it seems you didn’t when you submitted the nomination, and websites can be included in the supporting info. I would have also included some info in the description that it’s an art school offering classes to students of all ages, but that’s just me being a little picky, since you did mention it in the supporting info.

Thank you for the advice. I had the same thoughts. I submitted this right when I started wayfaring and have improved since. I will include the “adult classes” banner in front in the surrounding area picture, and put their website in the supporting and specifically mention adults.

One other thing to consider - it was probably an easy reject if reviewers thought the school was for children. However, if you resubmit it and clarify that it is not for children only, you’ll also need to be clearer on how the music school meets any of the three eligibility criteria: a great place to exercise (unlikely), a great place to explore (seems a stretch), or a great place to socialize… also seems unlikely, but maybe depending on the argument.

Just be sure you can explain which of the three criteria it meets and why.

You can exercise while you’re walking by as many do(or in dance classes), many people would love to know there’s a music school by downtown(explore) and while taking classes I would hope people could socialize. If Opus doesn’t meet those criteria, nor do 95% of waypoints in the game.

“You can exercise as you’re walking by” isn’t a connection to criteria, otherwise every rock and pebble would be eligible. You exercise at the dance studio and it’s a very good workout as well as typically being a social activity and people come to watch performances to explore culture and arts.

To be clear, something can meet eligibility criteria and still not be accepted due to meeting ineligibility criteria - such as the k-12 rejection reason. However, in this case, I think I agree that it should have been eligible.

Agree with @Gendgi. Yes, the hyperlink you provided tells of the other activities, but your description above does not. It just music school where you are going to take lessons. Be sure to include the other information if you resubmit.
