Multiple level 16 cells that should have gyms - but none

I believe this is a bug, so hopefully I’m posting in the correct spot.

There is a park near me that has had multiple level 16 cells with enough pokestops to trigger gyms for nearly 2 years now however there are no gyms at all. Game: Pokemon Go.

Here is the location of one of the stops in the park. (Below) From what I can see there are 2 cells that should have already had gyms and one cell with a new newly approved pokestop that should also be triggering a gym.

There are also several other POIs that could be pokestops/gyms/powerspots but I assume aren’t due to duplication in the lvl 17cells.

Hoping someone could take a look. It’s a busy park with 3 routes, lots of walkers and tons of parking. Great place to play.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Level 16 is not used.

Each L17 can have 1 stop / gym.
L14 is 8x8 L17.

2 wayspots = 1 Gym
6 wayspots = 2 Gyms
20 wayspots = 3 Gyms.

As shown below you have 16 wayspots. 14 stops and 2 Gyms as expected.

Hello and welcome @Valkelrie

The cell levels that are relevant are level 17 - small cells that allow pokestop per cell
And level 14 cells which are made up of 64 level 17 cells.
Level 14 have been observed to be the ones determining gyms.

The park is in 1 level 14 cell
This is a close up of the level 17

There are 9 occupied cells several with multiple wayspots.

You would expect gyms and there are 2 in this level 14

So there are the correct number just not in the park

Got it, thanks for the clarification. There are a few other POIs I know of in the larger area that could be nominated. Do we need 4 more way spots or 4 more pokestops to trigger another gym somewhere in this LVL 14 cell?

You will 6 more in the L14 cell but they must be in the empty L17 cells.

Got it. I’ll have to explore more and hope the good POIs happen to be in unique lvl 17 cells.

Thanks for the clarification and quick replies!

Although nominating in occupied cells will not get you the Stops / Gyms you are hoping for they are not wasted.

Your nomination could…

  • become a Powerspot (Dynamax / Gigantamax) depending on its proximity to other waypoints.
  • replace the existing waypoint if that is removed for legitimate reasons. ***
  • be used in other Scopely games.

*** Do Not attempt to get a legitimate wayspot removed just to get yours on to the map. This is seen as Abuse and can lead to suspension / bans of all accounts (Wayfarer, Pokemon Go and any other Scopely games).

Seems kind of stupid to remove a wayspot (Not that I know how) since the cell can only have 1 stop anyways. Why not keep the extra approved ones for possible power stops. I’ll always take the extra MPs during my park route walks.

I do hope there are enough POIs in the area to hopefully get another gym along my walking path, but as you said, if not I could still possibly get some Powerspots or more pokestops in the general area. It’s a win-win!

It has been known that someone that doesn’t know or understand the Cells nominates, gets accepted then asks why it’s not in game. When advised its due to the occupied cell they attempt to get the other removed so theirs appear. Maybe this would give them a “couch stop” or they are just unhappy that their wayspot didn’t give them what they wanted.

That is why I always give the warning

If there are stops really close to the grid lines, you might investigate if they are correctly placed. My first pokestop was mis-pinned by about six meters due to my inexperience and that landed it in a different s17. I got it moved later to its correct location (the s17 it should have been in was empty), which also unmasked a later submission (in the grid it was accidentally in). Just a difference of center of building vs perimeter wall at a fast food place.

@CostcoShopper13 's suggestion is an option but just a reminder to only attempt a “Location Edit” if the current pin is incorrect in the real world.

Not only moving a waypoint to an incorrect location but also moving a correct location to a similar correct location can be deemed “Abuse” and could lead to suspension of your wayfarer AND game accounts.

Yes, good to emphasize that! My example was specifically a bad pin, I had a mural on an exterior wall pinned in the middle of the restaurant’s dining room. But there’s a grid line through the middle of that room, and I submitted another item on the opposite wall, which got approved but didn’t appear because the game thought they were both in the same grid square. After the correction, both stops are now in game.

My point in mentioning it here is that your area might have similar errors. A mis pin of an item very close to a grid line (as mine was) could put it in a different square. Getting it moved - if the “correct” square is vacant - could unmask a currently approved but not visible item. Which would increase your stops per s14 grid count just the same as a new approval.
