New Wayfinder Rating -Discussion

We have them before in ingress. It was suspended because people spam submit anything to gain medal. Reviewer are flooded with junk submission

It was enough of a change to boost people’s motivation.

I hope to see a system in place that ensures people who act in accordance with the criteria don’t end up being treated as the black sheep of the family :ewe: :ram:

Great idea. Thanks!

Approved Wayspot at games, now They gpt AI to different it, your ingress period AI not yet mature

This year has been great for Wayfarer updates. First the Wayspot Map, followed by Web submissions and now Increased Nomination Cap and daily refresh. And we are only in May.
If more appeals arrive in the future, I got everything I ever wanted. But for now resubmitting instead of waiting for the 2 appeals every 15 days, becomes a viable option for me with Nominations refreshing up to 10 daily.

I currently have around 300 nomination photos stored on my phone. Under the old system, submitting all of them once would have taken until April 6th, 2027. With the new system, I should be able to submit everything by around June 20th, 2026.:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

This is probably my favorite update of the year so far. It genuinely motivates me to go outside more and make use of the spring and summer season to take even more beautiful nomination photos. Especially now that the trees are green again and the sky is clear blue. Thank you very much.

Definitely a fair concern, especially since cultural context can matter a lot for certain nominations.

But honestly, I think that is exactly why a rank based system would work well. Higher tier reviewers are usually the people with the most reviewing experience overall, so they are also the most likely to adapt responsibly when helping different regions.

Also, the idea is not really about constantly randomizing locations every day. It is more about giving experienced reviewers the flexibility to help where they are actually needed instead of locking them into one place for 3 months straight.

If anything, shorter cooldowns could actually improve the system globally because reviewers could temporarily assist rural or stagnant areas, clear queues, then move elsewhere once things slow down again. Right now many people avoid setting difficult or low activity Bonus Locations specifically because they know they are stuck there for months

I absolutely agree. By the new system an expert has likley done more than 1,500 reviews which means they are well into learning good wayfinding and can be trusted to review well or know when to skip something that might just be culturally complex. I loved previous event challenges where we had instant bonus changes and could literally hop all over the remote places of the world clearing thier backlog. I am always cautious about new reviewing changes but I do think it is a really valuable reward for experienced reviewers.

Exactly, and honestly the challenges are what gave me this idea in the first place.

During those events, so many of us would jump between rural and remote locations around the world specifically to help clear backlogs and move queues faster. It actually worked really well and tons of areas benefited from it.

That experience proved that experienced reviewers are more than willing to help underserved regions when they have the flexibility to do so. The current 3 month lock just discourages that kind of community support.

That is why I think a rank based cooldown system would fit perfectly with the new progression model. It would reward trusted reviewers while also helping Wayfarer globally at the same time.

I agree with your point. I’m currently bonused out to Libya to help someone from the forums, but I’m not sure if I will enjoy being there through July. I want to be able to hop in to help underserved places all over more freely.

Now that we have more nominations, would it be possible to have more appeals please ? :see_no_evil_monkey: :folded_hands:

This is honestly the perfect example of why the current system is too restrictive.

Huge respect to people like you who set their Bonus to underserved places just to help communities and move their queues forward. That kind of dedication is genuinely one of the best parts of Wayfarer.

The current 3 month lock can unintentionally discourage that eagerness to help, because it turns what should feel like temporary community support into a very long commitment.

I honestly believe that if experienced reviewers had more flexibility, far more people would be willing to temporarily jump into rural areas, smaller countries, and backlog heavy regions to help out, knowing they are not locked there for an entire season afterward.

That is exactly why I think a rank based cooldown system could benefit Wayfarer globally

I’ve reviewed in Kathmandu and enjoyed it, too. Even found some weird abuse to report.

For context here: I have 1981 points (which was enough to get Champion status immediately), with 1900 reviews resulting in 1455 agreements. (76.5 percent, and I haven’t done any this week so that’s probably solid)

I also have 87 approved wayspot nominations of my own, along with a few dozen extra photos; single digit numbers each of title edits, description edits, and location edits; and about 25-30 removal reports.

My own comment: I like the changes. I hope we get more appeals as well, and I am looking forward to submit distance increases.

In my particular situation, a submit distance of something like 30-40 km would be very good to have, as I (due to the nature of my job) pretty much drive around my metro area very randomly on a nearly daily basis, and am sometimes that far from either my home or my office. (At a rough count, I have around 20 approvals in the city, and one each in four different suburbs, not including the suburb that my house is in (where I have about 60), and only two outside of my metro area.)

It would be helpful to just be able to snap pictures (in phone camera mode) and worry about the submit later.

We NEED this!

I believe @00witsd is referring to only having the 2 appeals at one time, and then having to wait to get those 2 appeals back. And I agree, being able to have more appeals at once without having to wait half a month for more would be amazing!

Stories like this are honestly why I think the system has so much untapped potential.

What I really like here is that it shows how Bonus Locations are not just about reviewing. They let us experience completely different parts of the world. A lot of reviewers genuinely enjoy helping these communities and discovering places they would never normally see.

The unfortunate part is when one specific area slows down, there is no flexibility to continue helping nearby regions that still need reviewers. In cases like yours, being able to move around within underserved countries more freely would probably keep reviewers engaged and helping far longer instead of hitting a dead queue and waiting months

Honestly, experiences like this are exactly why I feel a more flexible Bonus Location system could become one of the best long term improvements for global reviewing.

Vielen Dank. Ich stimme Ihnen zu. Es ist nicht erstrebenswert drei Monate perspektivlos zu verbringen.

This is greatness!

Just a thought.
The criteria for earning the new rating include not only reviews but also past actions such as submitting and editing approved Wayspots. If the system internally manages this information, I wondered if it might be a good idea to reinstate the currently suspended automated approval process via ML for Wayfinders who meet a certain rating threshold and have approved a certain number of Wayspots.
While setting the threshold too low would significantly increase the risk of abuse, a high number of approvals suggests a strong likelihood that the Wayfinder is submitting requests that meet the criteria.
Therefore, to prevent the backlog from growing too large, I thought it might be a good idea to route requests from Wayfinders with a certain track record directly to ML-based review, rather than sending them through the standard review process.
If this were to be implemented, I think a round number like 1,000 or 1,500 Wayspots created could serve as a threshold. (To be honest, I’m not sure what the appropriate number would be.)
Of course, I expect there will be Wayfinders who try to abuse the system, so I believe a mechanism to impose functional restrictions should be built into the system.
