Fair and I’m not saying they should but maybe make rural areas more unique in a way like where in so deep in the Appalachian mountains maybe more pokemon should spawn more or something like that
Just chiming in to add a bit of knowledge you might be able to use… parks, churches, independent restaurants, and shopping centers work really well. If the facility crosses grid lines, look around carefully, there may be artwork or other things that can be submitted separately.
I’m not as rural as you, but as an example, we have 5 wayspots at my church (sign, two outdoor statues, a memorial marker in a garden, and a stained glass window) and the nearest city park has seven (and five vacant cells!). My favorite indie restaurant has two (murals on opposite walls, there’s a grid line through the center of the building).

Just to clarify, Pokémon spawns, gyms, pokestops, routes are all in-game features. How each game uses the database falls within the game team’s decision.
Each game also uses a wide array of databases to power their gameplay. Afaik spawns have been influenced by OSM tags that is rarely updated.

But that’s the PoGo team’s job, not the Wayfarer team’s.
There are a variety of things you can find for nomination and make your place more ‘playable’. These nominations need to be publicly accessible, distinct and safe. For example: community center; playground and playground sets; picnic area; free library; athletic field/court like football, soccer, tennis, track field; murals/graffiti; gateway or place name signs, churches or religious buildings, random statues or sculptures, hiking trails…
If you are not sure if this or that should be a wayspot, you can always post the photos here so people can give you advice. I’m from a village in Vietnam, not really a place as “rural” as yours but there too were nothing. Thanks for the help of other users, now my village has 19 wayspots, 4 of them are gyms.
