Power Spot vs. PokéStop?

I have three Power Spots close to my home, but no PokéStops. I submitted a stop and it was rejected (lost the appeal as well.)

Does Niantic ever consider converting a Power Spot to a PokéStop? I also submitted another stop that was accepted, and just after it went live, the closest existing PokéStop became a gym. I tried submitting wayspot edits, but didn’t receive any feedback.
The photo shows two active spots. The ? represents the third one that’s not showing up at the moment. The X is the rejected submission.

In some parts of the world, Niantic has promoted imported power spots that were only intended to be used that way to full fledged pokestops. But that is not usually the case. If you would like to leave the location, we can have a look at the S2 cells and see if there is a possibility for promotion to happen here under the normal algorithm.

Hey @PamL89

Welcome to the wayfarer forums, glad to have you here.

Let’s explain this.

Unfortunately it does not work as simple as you want.

When submitting you are submitting a wayspot to the Niantic/Scopely Database. Based on cell rules the spot will be chosen accordingly

Cell information here:

Powerspots are very specific. When in a L17 S2 cell it has to be at least 22M away from a existing pokestop or gym in that same cell to have a chance of becoming a powerspot.

If a L17 S2 cell is still empty, the first spot that is submitted there will always be a pokestop or gym.

I will leave it here for now.

If you want more information, feel free to ask more questions.

Good luck

Welcome to the forums

A lot of the powerspots, and almost certainly these three, were created by Niantic importing them into the system, Most of the time, they are not things that would be eligible as user-submitted wayspots. If you do happen to find one that could be a wayspot, you can submit it without worrying about duplication.

Just because you have imported powerspots near you does not mean you have an eligible POI near you to be a wayspot. Each wayspot submission is independent and needs to meet key criteria (exercise, social, exploration) as well as meeting eligibility criteria (accessibility, location, etc).

What is the best way to leave the leave the location?

This is a little confusing as there are zero PokéStops in the area. The nearest is about a mile away.

using google maps, you can right-click on any point of interest and the first thing in the drop down menu will be coordinates which you can copy-paste.

They look something like 34.42423, -20.21344

you could just give that intersection location - i should be able to get close enough from that. don’t give your personal address in a public forum like this.

This might be because no-one has submitted any wayspots in your area. It may be there isn’t anything, but if you do post your location, people will help hunt for possible things to submit.

Here is an explanation from staff on how the original Power Spots were populated.

I think I have found the location, if I am correct this seems to be another for my list of “Great places to live, not so good for Pokemon Go”…

I am seeing signs for a wedding venue, that definitely have possibilities.

There is a playground & pool. If this is not a Single Family Private Residence Property (SFPRP) then that could be nominated.

There’s a Sign for “United Methodist Church”. (Nominate the Church, not the sign).

Good Luck.

The coordinates I found are (41.1018613, -80.2139212)

I know the Methodist church. I think maybe it used to be a stop when I played years ago. I may nominate it and see what happens. The residence with the pool is actually also the location of a power spot (it’s the one a bit down route 19) as the pest Control business owner runs his business from there. I nominated the wedding venue sign at the intersection, but it was rejected for lack of access. I walk there all the time, but I get it.

There is also the Hillcrest Presby Church

I think the information has been provided to you already, but in the beginning many imported spots were set on the map by Niantic/Scopely to act as powerspots that could be used, that do not meet the criteria. These also did not have to follow these cell rules.

I checked here and all three of these Power Spots do appear to be the imported ones I mentioned that are not eligible to be promoted to Poke stops.

I see you were given some great information already while I was out to lunch! I also wanted to link you to this topic that may give you some ideas for points of interest to try: Tips for Rural Nominators

Thanks! It looks like a great resource!

In most cases, the imported businesses do not meet eligibility. But when they do, as is probably the case for this Fitness Center, they can be submitted. You can see if it actually exists there and try to submit it. If accepted, this would be eligible to become a Pokestop (or gym) but would result in being removed from the Power Spot pool.

That area is about two miles away. The problem with that spot is it’s in a valley and there’s awful cell reception. There’s a gym and a stop as well as some power spots there. I can rarely hit them.

I only found the sign so not sure whether it is already a stop.

So guess this is a SFPRP, running the business from there does not change it :frowning:

Is it possible to nominate the actual venue, not the sign?

If not the sign could be used as an “anchor” but pin on the actual venue. It has car parks so Access should not be a problem. Even if only people that are invited to the wedding can reach it, it should still be eligible.

Good Luck.
