Question about the Proposal Process in Wayfarer

Hello everyone,

I am an active Niantic player, and I have some questions about the process that a nomination goes through once it’s submitted. As far as I understand, the process is as follows:

  1. In Queue or Upgrade Needed: The nomination is placed in a waiting queue or flagged for improvements.
  2. Initial Review: It undergoes an initial review, which could be automated (by a bot) or done by other explorers.
  3. Explorers’ Evaluation: If it passes the initial review, the nomination is then voted on by explorers.
  4. Outcome: Based on the votes, the proposal is either accepted or rejected.
  • If accepted, the POI (Point of Interest) should appear within a maximum of 48 hours.
  • If rejected, there is an option to appeal, with a limit of 2 active appeals at a time. How long does it take to reactivate an appeal?

I also understand that there can be automatic rejections by Niantic (bot) in certain cases. Could someone clarify these points or correct me if I’m mistaken? Any additional information about the specifics and estimated times for each stage would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

ML (the bot) can do a straight acceptance. We have observed those happen within 20-24 hours of hitting the submit button in the game (even if you choose upload later).

Also, just because a wayspot is accepted, that doesn’t mean it will show up in any game. It may show up in Ingress, PGO, both, or neither, depending on the inclusion rules for each game.

No one is told they have to upgrade a submission; upgrades are optional. Upgrades just open your submission up to a larger review area, so more reviewers see it, and a decision is typically made faster. Also, submissions that are in voting can still be upgraded. So you can have Upgraded on almost all statuses; even submissions that have been decided upon and upgraded will still have the Upgraded tag.

Even with ML making making decisions, ML still pulls a submission into voting; I’ve seen this happen to a few of my submissions within 24 hours of submission, and a few minutes later ML makes a decision. So, the diagram that Niantic has listed on the Contribution Management page is still how submissions are processed, even with ML or a submission pulled for review by Niantic (In Voting with the Niantic logo).

Thank you for the detailed explanation about the upgrade process and how ML handles submissions. It’s helpful to know that upgrades are optional and how they can impact the review speed and visibility.I understand that once a Wayspot nomination is rejected, it’s possible to appeal up to two rejections at the same time on the Wayfarer page.

My question is about the lifecycle of an appeal: once those appeals are submitted, do we need to wait for them to be resolved before appealing other Wayspots, or do they unlock after a certain time? Thanks again for your insights!

You can only appeal a rejected submission once. It’s then decided upon by the Niantic team; reviewers are not involved in the appeals process. You can resubmit rejected submissions even if not accepted by the appeals team, but you may want to post about it in the Nomination Support thread as there may be some improvements that could be made.

You get 2 appeals every 20 days, so if you have appealed 1 submission, you still have another appeal to use within those 20 days. You do not need to use both of your appeals in the 20 day period, especially if you have nothing to appeal; only submissions rejected by ML or reviewers can be appealed.

If 20 days has passed and your appeals have not been resolved, your new alottment of appeals will refresh.

I just wanted to mention that there is a setting in your Wayfarer account to automatically apply upgrades once they’re earned. I believe this applies an upgrade to your oldest outstanding nomination, unless you have something marked Upgrade Next. I would recommend turning this option off, so you can control when and where an upgrade is used, and you don’t accidentally waste one when you didn’t want to
