Random removals of Pokestops in Oxford, UK

Dear Wayfarer Team,

I recently noticed that many Pokestops/POIs got removed in the historic part of Oxford, UK. The places do not appear as Pokestops anymore, but are empty instead. I went to doublecheck and I can confirm that these POIs are well accessible for Pedestrians and they still do exist. I took new pictures for those POIs, in case they are needed. In total I found 5 Pokestops that got wrongly removed. They impact the ability to play in parts of the city centre. I’m listing them here:

  • Wayspot Title: Christ Church Fountain
  • Location (lat/lon): 51.750182,-1.255848
  • City: Oxford
  • Country: United Kingdom
  • Wayspot Title: WW1 Memorial at Christ Church Cathedral

  • Wayspot Title: Sheldonian Theatre

Many thanks for looking into this!

Welcome to the forum @Sasuke332

Do you think it’s possible that the property owners have requested the removal of these stops?

Thanks for welcoming me!

These POIs belong to the university and in fact they get frequented a lot by tourist groups. Oxford, UK, is a university town and these POIs are on university grounds, so I think they should be eligible. Quite sad we lost the Sheldonian Theatre, which is one of the most iconic buildings in Oxford.

Hello
Hank and I are both U.K. based so understand the situation in Oxford. You will not only have tourists but an influx of freshers. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Several of those removed wayspots are clustered together which can be an indicator of a removal request by property owner.
If you go to the location and start the process to submit, do these appear as orange pins on the map?
The wayfarer team will hopefully comment if it is a property owner request.
If the removals include gyms, then the probability is that their removal will have triggered new gyms to appear. Those new gyms will remain as any previous gyms will have now lost that status.

Yes, they appear as orange pins on the map still. 4 out of the 5 listed could be reached from the main roads even without any problems.

It is sounding like a property owner request. The fact they can be accessed from a distance doesn’t matter. Are there also powerspots adjacent? It could be that large groups have been playing at the locations and perhaps the locations didn’t like the impression it created or one or two were not respectful of others.
At this point you need to wait for a response from the wayfarer team.

It would sound a bit weird to me if that was a property owner’s request as these places are normally full of people, visitors, staff, tourists etc. The places are open to the public during normal opening hours (and barred otherwise, so there is no way of trespassing outside opening hours).

If a place has been getting a large number of players and this disrupts other people from using that place, the property owner may well have a problem. I can imagine crowds of pogo players might be frequently blocking a path and the only way past is to divert onto the grass (which has signs saying not to walk on it).

When raiding and doing gigantamax battles, pogo players tend to stay in one spot, which can block the flow of people. Other visitors to interesting places tend to move around, which allows the flow of people. The busier and more constricted a space is, the more likelihood of there being a problem.

Hey @Sasuke332 , Welcome to Wayfarer Community Forum.

There was a restriction at this location in the past which has recently been removed. There is an ongoing bug that is not allowing these locations to be reinstated.

We have already flagged this issue and our team is actively looking into it. Unfortunately, we don’t have an exact timetable on when this issue will be resolved.

We apologize for any frustration this may have caused and appreciate your patience and understanding.

Regards,

Many thanks for your reply @NianticOren and flagging this. I’ll be hoping for the best and this issue to be resolved.
