UK Postboxes Topic

Hi

Just a quick question about postboxes…

So I nominated a local postbox on my usual walking route, which was rejected also in the appeal, on the grounds it was made of plastic. (Traditional style red pillbox type, QEII)

My question is, going forwards alot of postboxes look like they will be made of plastic as it’s cheaper etc. I also know alot of current iron ones will also be being upgraded (there’s a whole thing about postboxes being wrapped in black plastic, marking them for replacement) so will postboxes no longer be viable as nominations? I couldn’t see that the material it was made of was a criteria, I see it as same object, with same historical marking but in a modern material. But that’s more or less what I have been told in my feedback. (I know some iron ones Will obviously get made for certain places, but plastic is what my local area got)

I only ask as I have a few friends on pogo where we like to trade postbox postcards… So new ones are always welcome. But will I be wasting my time by nominating any new ones?

Sorry if it’s a daft question, but still learning what’s acceptable. So just want some clarity (also it’s not a moan, I’m fine with the decision just want to understand)

Thanks
Ash

Postboxes aren’t typically eligible at all, but the older ones featuring rare cyphers have typically been accepted. Cypers for Queen Elizabeth 2nd have never been widely accepted though as they represent most of the post boxes around today

So, as a general rule, ER2 postboxes are not eligible mainly because of the sheer number of them. Some people will argue (rightly or wrongly) that GR5 are not eligible either. CR3 postboxes are currently not eligible.

Work on the assumption that any UK Postboxes prior to ER2 are eligible. There is a thread about this subject which covers the legacy of Postboxes in the UK.

*Footnote: The Golden Postboxes with ER2 are eligible. I hear there are some black Postboxes, but I don’t have much knowledge or experience of these.

There is a topic devoted to these things that the rest of the world does not understand: UK Postboxes Topic

Mods will probably move this discussion there.

Word of precaution… if you see a Postbox attached to a private property, make sure it’s not a Single Family Private Property. Also, some people will buy replica Postboxes and attach it to their property.

To be British and pedantic, those do have public access, because the homeowners can’t prevent people using the postbox - they dont own it! I wouldn’t accept anything else attached to/at a single family private residential house though, would have a hard time saying thr postbox doesn’t have access though because to reject for that would actually be untrue despite what Niantic want

I don’t disagree with your point, but am wondering if those will fall foul of the Wayfarer criteria.

I’m sure they do, and they have all been submitted long ago(probably in the ingress days or before) around here so not my concern

I know of one that was approved about a couple of years ago (or at least post-pandemic). I still have my doubts as to the eligibility…. But it’s not to say they are not eligible.

You could possible go with “Explore” if it was something along the lines of “The 1st one”.

Access is not the Criteria, anything attached to SFPRP should be rejected. Think Little Free Library on the wall. Easy access, still not eligible.

I believe the first CR3 Postbox (In Cambridge from what I recall) has been accepted. I don’t know if subsequent ones will be acceptable.

We don’t have any local and not had any for review.

Would “1st in county” be acceptable?
Are there any different designs of them yet?

It will be dependant on whether there is enough community demand to accept it. As King Charles 3 is still alive, I wouldn’t be inclined to approve any just yet.

Just got this in review: is it eligible??

Cláirseach postbox

Traditional Irish green postbox with a harp symbol

Hmm. Visible on 2023 streetview, definitely not there on 2010 streetview. Going to have to reject on the same basis as the EIIR postboxes.

Just got this one myself.

Looks to be SFPRP?

Wrong colour, Wrong symbol, no mention of Royal Mail, No collection times information. Looks like someone’s elaborate personal letter box.

It looks fairly close to what I see on a google image search for “Irish postbox” and does appear on 2023 streetview, so not faked, although it might or might not be a legitimate postbox. it looked old, but had the SFPRP issue and the definite non-existence in 2010.

It was stated in the supplemental about it being a different colour, logo etc to the usual ones in the area.

Ah, ok. I didn’t pay much attention to that after doing the streetview check!
