Valid graffiti?

Hi all,

during vacation I submitted this graffiti artwork located at a wall next to the cities sports hall. As it got rejected for vandalized graffiti I was asking myself if this graffiti has any chance to get accepted because for me this graffiti (wall) provides some nice artworks besides some larger sprayer tags. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any information if the artworks were part of a official graffiti workshop or something like that. But regarding the one artwork with the sprayer can (which unfortunately was somewhat obscured and is displayed to the right of the Grim Reaper around the corner) I think this might be approved graffiti. What are other opinions on this?

Title: Graffiti de la Parca

Description: Parte del muro de graffiti del campo de deportes y pabellón polideportivo de Torrox.

Supporting text: Gracias (I know this is a little bit short but I forgot to change it in time)

Location: 36.762083, -3.958827 (Street View)

Review rejection: The submission lacks uniqueness or historical and cultural meaning

Appeal Notes: The image shows a graffiti of a Grim Reaper located on the back of this sports hall in Torrox. This is approved graffiti featuring various art styles and not just simple sprayer tags. As a car was parked directly in front of it, the image is slightly slanted, but still clearly recognizable. As a Wayspot, the hidden location could be made more visible in the game so that the artwork can be admired. Street View also provides a good view of it. Thank you.

Appeal Rejection: Thanks for the appeal, Wayfinder! The nomination in question seem to be vandalized or non-commissioned graffiti which does not meet Wayfarer nomination criteria bar for approval. We recommend you review the Wayspot nomination criteria clarification forum discussion library before submitting your next Wayspot contribution: Forum Criteria Discussions Library — Wayfarer Help Center

Welcome to the forums

Quick answer from looking at streetview: No, this is just graffiti and is not eligible.

As reviewers we only have what you state to make the decision.

I personally use the following simplified definitions…

Authorised - Mural - Accept
Un-authorised - Graffiti - Vandalism - Reject

Their are a few exceptions but the majority fall in to the 2 definitions.

Unless you have evidence that it was authorised then I would reject all of these.

After another research (should have done this in the first place ^^') I managed to find this article: “Torrox No Duerme” sigue el 2 de mayo from 2009 which suggests that these graffitis could be part of it.
This event took place right next to the graffiti wall at the sports hall “La Granja”. The article also mentions “murales” in the penultimate paragraph which could include this graffiti.
The graffiti also features “09”, which usually refers to the year it was created (this can be seen more clearly on Street View). This would also fit with the article and mean that the main graffiti was legally created in 2009.

I try to stay out of graffiti discussions since I do not have much experience with it here, but at least the first photo does seem comparable to this :+1: example of street art.

This sounds like good evidence for this being a valid piece of artwork.

I have submitted graffiti art at a skatepark that would be comparable to this and it was accepted. So I think context and location matters - I think its accepted that skateparks welcome graffiti art, so it wasnt considered vandalism

If you try again you can use the link and maybe try focussing on a different view for the main image, showing more of the scope of it? I agree with Cyndie that the pictures you shared do look like a match for examples of good quality artwork in the guidelines so this could be okay?
