Wayfarer Not Allowing Full Name To Be Used

I have just submitted multiple new Waypoints, however I can’t use the proper names as Wayfarer was flagging them.

Somehow the bridge which was named after him got through (wasn’t submitted by me) but a few other potential waypoints were blocked when i tried to use “Bonner”

Is it possible for Niantic to go in and modify the submissions to be the full “Neville Bonner”?

I have to be careful here… part of the title is considered a sexual reference. Saying that, I am surprised on of your other nominations made it through with b*st is linked to a bodily part. So whilst the title is valid and refers to a genuine location, the filter says no.

The naughty word only has 1 “n” though.

I don’t know if that would make any difference. It’s possible that people would use 2 n’s to get around the filter, which is possibly the reason why the version with 2 n’s are included in the filter.

At this point, I am speculating, until Niantic confirms, please take my response with a huge pinch of salt.

Wow, that’s so strange, since Bonner isnt an English bad word and you’re submitting in English… hopefully someone can fix it for you, seems somehow wrong to have to use only a first name!

Edit: the forum doesnt mind Bonner either and that filter is pretty over zealous

I would try an edit, to see if it has different exclusions. AI might read the word on the sign and accept. Or it might go to the community, who could figure it out.

I searched for Bonner, and did find it listed as the female equivalent to the 1 n version with Urban Dictionary, making it vulgar slang. So, because of this, I think it’s why it’s a banned word.

I just searched for “meaning of Bonner,” but one of the related searches was “urban meaning of Bonner.”

It’s disheartening for sure, but Niantic takes precautions because certain words are open to abuse. I can’t use Pinner in titles of any of my nomindations… strange but true.

Pinner? As in, an area in London?

Yep… I won’t tell you what the Urban Dictionary says for part of the word… but trust me, I learnt something new.

I feel like banning every word listed in an obscure online dictionary when 99% of the time the word means a real world location or person is overkill

P.S. I have family living in Pinner. Its not a rude word, its a place. Insanity

Pinner is an ok place. Better than some places I know. But the Urban Dictionary has lost my interest in the place… I can never tell anyone that I am going to Pinner ever again.

Maybe try with 3 n? Put a space in the middle? Replace a letter with a Greek symbol?

Now that all of them have been approved, could Niantic please go in and add the full name, Neville Bonner.

I think you may want to contact Niantic via help chat with this info, as I don’t think staff will make any changes here in the forums.

Yes, there are many words in Urban Dictionary that are names for people, places, and things, and their original meaning has nothing to do with any of the meanings on Urban Dictionary.

Bonner, for example, means “gentle, courteous,” coming from the French debonair. But, of course, humans take words with benign meanings and decide to give them new ones, sometimes vulgar and completely opposite of their original meanings. In this case, it’s because Bonner is now a vulgar slang for the female version of Bonner minus 1 N.

The @Ambassadors have been collecting many of the banned words that we have come across to help improve the banned word filter with Niantic, especially those that we only find out later have possible vulgar meanings. Hopefully they can get Bonner added to the list.

Fun part for me is that there is a whole gernan Town named Bonn, and someone from there is called Bonn er.

Following up on this, using the “Report Abuse” link didn’t work. Got palmed off and told to submit the edit via the app, which obviously doesn’t work with a name that isn’t allowed.
