Waypoints never become pokestops

Both the L14 (Larger Cells) in this area have the maximum 3 Gyms due to having 20+ Occupied L17 (Smaller Cells).

Everything seems to be working as expected.

With the following map I have removed the (Dynamax) Powerspots and the ā€œNot In Gameā€ so you only see…

Blue Circles = Pokestops
Red Circles = Gyms (I have added arrows to highlight).

The 2 Cells (Red Lines) are the Larger L14 cells.

As I have had to zoom out the smaller L17 cells are not displayed but there is a grid of 8x8 (64) of these in each L14.

Only 1 wayspot in each L17 will become a Pokestop or Gym.

The amount of occupied L17s in each L14 will determine how many will be a Gym.

  • 2 Occupied Cells = 1 Pokestop and 1 Gym.
  • 6 Occupied Cells = 4 Pokestops and 2 Gyms.
  • 20 Occupied Cells = 17 Pokestop and 3 Gyms.

Hope this helps.

In this area there were a pokestop and 3 waypoints but now they are gone

@SlimboyFat71

There are several ā€œNot Used In Gameā€ in this area (White Circles) which is correct as they are in occupied L17 cells.

In the past there was a way to get more than 1 to show in each cell by nefarious means but this ā€œshouldā€ no longer happen and if it comes to the attention of staff they will ā€œre-Syncā€ the map.

The only current way this ā€œshouldā€ happen is with ā€œSponsoredā€ wayspots (where companies pay to have spots) which don’t follow the same rules.

The map looks like it is now working correctly, any additional stops / gyms should not have been there and it seems this has been fixed.

Just another thought as you said ā€œa pokestopā€. Is it possible the 1 that was showing as a stop was removed ā€œNo longer there, On School Propertyā€ etc, if so when removed 1 of the ā€œNot Used In Gameā€ will have taken it’s place.

There hasent showed up any new pokestops and the ones not in game is also gone, it might haven been removed for the reason you are saying but why is the hole celled cleared of everything? Shouldent one of the others outside of the school become a new stop?

On your picture its the whiter cell down in the Middle

Cell 1 does not show any wayspots either Live or ā€œNot In Gameā€, if there where any then they have all been removed.

Cell 2 includes 1 wayspot but it looks to be 1 of the imports used when Dynamax was new. These do not follow the rules of wayfarer and will not be used to replace Stops / Gyms.

Hi, i was wondering or anyone knows what a reason a cell is conpletly cleared of pokestop and waypoints? I had one in my area also 1-2 dynamaxstops, but now they are all gone, and cant be showed on the nianticmap either.

It is hard to address this generally, but if the locations were deemed to go against Wayfarer criteria, they could have been reported and removed. Or the property owner could have made a request to Niantic to have them removed. Would you like to give a specific location? GPS coordinates are easiest to work with.

I assume this is the same problem as discussed in the other thread…

https://community.wayfarer.nianticlabs.com/t/waypoints-never-become-pokestops

I suggest sticking to 1 thread to keep it all in 1 place…

I have merged this into the main topic.

Yes it was in number one, 1 pokestop, 2 power (dynamax) and 1 not in game, they are all gone for some reason

This is OpenStreetMap, as far as I am aware everything shaded in Yellow is School Property.

Wayfarer criteria states…

So even items that are usually easy Accepts, if there are anywhere on school grounds including attached to the boundary fence / wall etc they are ineligible.

I do wonder though, in the town I live in, there are multiple L17 cells with more than 1 pokestop. We even have an L17 cell with 3 gyms in it. If I understand it all correctly, it shouldn’t be possible to have more than 1 stop in an L17 cell, yet.. the contrary seems to be true. Also, we have 5 gyms in 1 L14 cell..

Welcome. There are multiple scenario:

  1. Sponsored pokestop and gym doesnt follow standard wayfarer criteria and can go beyond 1 wayspot/ cell limit (niantic never acknowledge s2 cells)
  2. Location edit in the past enable pokestop/gym to retain their status so 1 cell can have multiple pokestop/gym. But staff will resync the cell if they notice it or someone report them.

There does seem to be the occasional instances where it doesn’t work as expected.

Local park has 4 wayspots, 1 (exercise equipment - definitely not Sponsored) had been misplaced likely for empty cell. I moved it (June 2025 - so past issue did not exist). Still 2 in the same cell to this day

Is there a max amount of stops per L14 cell? I just got a new waypoint approved, in an empty L17 cell, but yet it won’t become a stop. For the record, it’s this one: 59.395978, 15.837326

I don’t pretend to understand everything that can happen with Niantic’s algorithms (that they don’t even acknowledge). I would assume the issue with this one is either that there hasn’t been a sync since it was approved (daily sync is expected to happen in about a hour or so) or it may have something to do with whatever forced two pokestops into a cell adjacent to it. The blue circles indicate pokestops.
