Did my first nomination and it got rejected. Read rules before starting to make sure I’m doing things somewhat right but I’m assuming because it’s just a generic neighborhood sign but maybe I’m missing something to tack on as to why. Hoping to get some human feedback on what’s wrong so I can improve on future attempts at nominations. Thank you in advance!
Belvedere entrance sign
Description: Enterance sign to the Belvedere neighborhood
Supplemental info: Great community spot where people of all ages walk, bike, etc.
Fair point. I’ve seen some locations with neighborhood signs as spins before but I’m assuming it’s because they look unique in some way. Aside from that for future nominations we’re the descriptions ok or could they improve?
The supplemental needs to explain how it meets the criteria. You were asked which one it meets to get you to think about this one specifically rather than any other wayspots you’ve ever seen. Unfortunately, people allow some wayspots through that don’t meet any criteria, and then others just want to copy that.
If you can convince that this does meet criteria, you should say how it does in the supplemental section. Not what people can do there, but what this sign encourages.
Your description would be fine if you could convince it meets criteria, but you have a typo for “entrance” if you copy/pasted your description. That isn’t a rejection reason, but why give reviewers any reason to nitpick?
For future photos, try to keep the focus mainly on the poi, with just enough background to help anchor it in space. The more the photo looks like a great Wayspot, the easier it is to get reviewers to accept it. I take my photos before I ever begin my nomination, then crop or straighten or make minor adjustments before I submit. You can edit text in your contributions page, but not the photo or the pin. If I were going to submit this, I would have cropped it more like this
Since your nomination was rejected for “Wayfarer criteria” it was most likely a rejection by Niantic’s ML (machine learning ai) model. The email will say the rejection was by “our team” instead of the community. I know the ML model seems to be confused by a lot of background in the photo.
Out of sheer curiosity how come this wouldn’t be considered * A great place for exercise? I’d say the area would encourage more to walk the area. Just want to pick the brain of the more experienced. Is it just the fact that it’s just a sign in a neighborhood?
It’s a neighborhood where people do walk. But people don’t come here from out of their way to walk.
I think a great place to exercise will naturally draw people to exercise there. I lived in California for awhile. There was a giant sand dune thing not too far from where I lived. This thing was packed every morning and the better part of the day on the weekend. People loved to train on this thing.
Now this is just a personal example, but I think it paints the picture of how I feel about a Great place to exercise.
Yeah, it boils down to: what is the object designed to do? This is not designed for exercise.
A walking trail? Designed for exercise
Athletic court? Designed for exercise
Dojo? Designed for exercise
Playground? Designed for kids to run around
etc.
A neighborhood sign is designed to tell people where you live. Builders used it as a way to advertise and sell their homes.
Keep looking for stuff. Wayfarer is a lot of fun once you figure it out. The main switch people have to make is to stop trying to find something where they want it and find things where they are.
If I were trying to find things where I’m not, then I’d need to go there and take pictures. If I can find things where I am, then I can take pictures without going somewhere else.
If I can’t find anything, then I go somewhere else, but now that I’m somewhere else, I’m trying to find things where I am again.
Take @cyndiepooh 's advice and get a lot closer to the object. Put your camera into a 1:1 aspect ratio (the photodisc likes squares). IMO neighborhood signs are places to explore, as long as they are not in front of somones private residence, without some sort of separation, this may be a problem with this one. Be better if I could see a satellite image.
This one might be difficult to get through from the map view you have provided. It looks really close to somones home.
Can you explain why you would think neighborhood signs would be a place to explore? Trail markers mark trails designed for exploring an area. That’s not what neighborhood signs are designed for and they usually just mark the entrance to a residential area. Neighborhoods are rarely a place to explore (maybe an old historic neighborhood filled with homes on a historic register or something), but a rather they are just a place where people live.
Depends on the sign and how it’s presented in the neighborhood. The more park like area there is around the sign the better. Making it a place to gather. Also IMO it functions just like a trail marker, let’s you know when you reach the area you want to be. Here are a few examples.
I’m not saying every sign is eligible, it depends on the context around the sign and area. To me signs with phone numbers (apartment complexs) or seller information are not ones I would submit. It’s got to be something more, have some sort of structure. Like I said with the OP’s post. I’m not sure I would accept that one myself, I would need to see more.
I would vote favorably on your first two as unique art/architecture but not the third. I don’t think anyone can convince me that these signs serve as trail markers.
I didn’t think anyone would ever convince me that I shopping center sign would be a point of Interest, but now I’m at least going around and making sure they look nice in the photo. To me the neighborhood signs are more interesting than any generic shopping center sign
Sigh. You have a point about the shopping center signs. But I at least fall back on the fact that the Wayfarer team told me shopping center signs can be eligible. I still have only submitted a few. Actually, I’m probably pretty even on submitting shopping center signs and genuinely unique neighborhood entrance amenities.
