Travel Recommendations for Niantic players

Hello All -

I thought it might be fun to share some travel tips for those of us who enthusiastically play one or more of Niantics games.

Gear:
usually just use my phone and bring a charger with me. I’ll stop in at a coffee shop or pub for refreshments and a recharge. I had a bad experience a few years back with a charging brick… but open to recommendations!

Trip suggestions:
My upcoming trip starts at the beginning of Nov and is approximately 3 weeks long.

  • starting and ending in London but will be at an event in the Newcastle area.
  • Next up is several days in and around Edinburgh
  • Then some time in and around Alta in Norway.

I’m the only Niantic player in the group and obviously we do have many things planned already… But we are all adults so in addition to cool sights, I’d love some Pub and grub recommendations

Are there any other things I should be considering as a player for extended travel and exploration?

Mods please remove or modify if this post is not allowed or inappropriate

Edit to add: I think I’m asking for your favorite wayspots in those general areas.

Wayfarer is all about exploring ……so perhaps this could be some wayspots to visit.
And you might like to try and submit some too.
I think @26thDoctor could maybe recommend some places in Edinburgh including a police box :sunglasses:
And places in London

@Trollfarer might have some advice about Norway

I would dress for the weather if you are in Newcastle and Edinburgh in November.

Keeping it Wayfarer themed…

You’ll pass this in The Grassmarket

where there are plenty of pubs and places to eat and the amazing https://www.marysmilkbar.com/ before you climb up to here

The Royal Mile, Cowgate and Canongate where you’ll see these

are steeped in history, buildings, shops like this

I didn’t think to ask about the weather. I know it’ll be chilly to cold. Will it likely be raining also?

Leith is also with a visit where you’ll pass this

Once a fishing port and pretty dangerous place. It’s now full of cafes, bars and art and fish and chips

You might pass this art

On your way to the National Gallery. I prefer the Modern 1 and Modern 2 galleries out a bit from the centre of town though

Any visit to the U.K. is likely to involve rain.

I would expect it and be happily surprised if it’s not

This is from the end of Nov

I love snow! And this is a beautiful photo for the nomination :smile_cat:

Luckily I have real winters in my neck of the woods too. So I’ll be sure to pack with that in mind.

Also … Don’t call anyone English in Edinburgh and good luck with the Newcastle accent.

Point taken!

We went to New Zealand several years ago. They are quite proud that they are not Australian.

We will also be going to a football game - England vs Ireland. We have been warned not to dress wrong for our section.

You’re supposed to call it soccer when you’re there.

I always have a microfibre cloth, I can clean up an information board or trail marker if I spot one to submit.

That should be fun.

They can be pretty heated affairs as soccer is also intertwined with history, politics, religion and class

Also Eh(as in meh) -din-bu-ru as opposed to Edin- burrow.

Thank you for the proper pronunciation!

I am fairly adept about quickly understanding accents. Though since I’m many years out of college, it may have dropped off. Unfortunately I struggle with my own pronunciation for awhile.

My friends and I are pretty excited to go to the game. I suspect that folks will be much more engaged than they are at sporting events in the US.

I can only equate it to maybe Alabama/Auburn, USC/UCLA, Michigan/Ohio but with 1,000 years of history, religion and politics thrown in for fun too.

Hi @LetsRollGirl
If you have enough time between your planed stops you could maybe help out with this:

Or that:

I love this idea! Thank you for thinking of pulling items from that thread. I will need to look more closely at our travel schedule, but I’d love to help and nominate things while I’m traveling.

Alta in November?? Bring clothes, ALOT of them. If you plan to hike somewhere, plan carefully and watch the weather forecast. Its no joke up there, its also dark all day.

You can visit the Northern lights cathedral (Nordlyskatedralen) in the urban center of Alta.
If the weather is clear, you always have a great chance to see aurora. It happens almost daily at this point.
A short and safe hike is up to Komsa/Komsatoppen, you can view the entire town from there.

If you want any help with finding something up here, you can always ask me. (Unless your guide knows)
